The Daring Book for Girls

As soon as I cracked open my copy of The Daring Book for Girls from the Parent Bloggers Network, I knew I was in love this book. Only twenty pages in, and I was hooked.

The book cost me a good night of sleep but it was totally worth it. (BTW - The Daring Book for Girls may have the same look and feel as it's inspiration The Dangerous Book for Boys, but it was written by different authors, Miriam Peskowitz and Andrea Buchanan).

The Daring Book for Girls is a great reference book for any young girl in your life. Even if she is a toad-in-pocket tomboy or a pretty-in-pink ballerina princess, there will be dozens of chapters to suit every kind of girl out there.

Like all my book reviews, I sat down with my trusty post-it tabs to mark areas of interest while reading. Ummmm.... let's just say I marked almost every second page.

Want to do know how to tie a sari? It's in there. Need to understand the periodic table of elements? It's there. Money management? The "Finance: Interest, Stocks, and Bonds" chapter is essential reading.

I love that the book includes all the hand clap games from my childhood (great time killers on rainy days), and the fun math tricks that my dad taught me are there too. From crafts to history (womencentric of course), from first-aid to karate moves, from palm-reading to sport rules, this book packs it in.

One chapter that blew me away - because I think it is an important lesson for everyone regardless of career path - is "Robert's Rules". This chapter describes in The Basic Rules of Parliamentary Procedure. Sounds boring? Oh no, it's not boring, it's essential for anyone who wants to be a productive member of an organization, manage or run an organized group. This chapter is a fantastic foundation for any girl who wants to be a project manager or run their own business. Oh and the chapter on "How to Negotiate a Salary" is a must read.

Oh oh oh and a chapter that made me laugh? The one that includes "Seven things you probably didn't know about Canada". Yes folks, it's true - the US tried to invade us TWICE and we beat them back both times. What's missing from that list? That Canada invaded the US and burned down the White House back in 1814 in retaliation for trying to invade Toronto. Peace folks, peace is the only answer.

The only chapter that I thought needed improvement? Boys. One page of pep talk on being yourself seemed a bit slim. I was expecting the mysteries of the men in my life to be revealed. OK, I kid - confidence and loving yourself are the most important things to remember. I just wish I had gotten that pep-talk (or read) when I was a girl. Would have saved me from dating a whole lotta frogs.

I wish I could tell you everything I loved about this book but that would take too long. The Daring Book for Girls is a great gift for any young girl, it's brimming with useful information, women's history, and fun games & crafts. You can't ask for much more from one book.

I just checked this out at Indigo yesterday, but decided it could wait a few years before Pumpkinpie is in need of any of that stuff! It is a good one, though, for fun kid stuff like cootie catchers as well as older stuff like salaries.

(And did you see that article about how a study of videotaped salary negociations revealed a lot about why women get paid less? Interesting stuff.)

SoccerGirl is getting this book for Christmas... I am buying it in about 3 hours.

Pssst! Those troops that burned the White House were British. Some Canadian milita were involved, but the main force was of British regulars, recently arrived here from fighting Naopleon's armies in Europe. This was in retalition for the burning of York (Toronto).
