If you read my review blog regularly, you may know I love playing games on my Nintendo DS. If you read my regular blog regularly, you may know that my three year old can kick my butt on the DS which makes me both proud and scared. She figures out these things way faster than me and that blows my mind.
Recently through The Parent Bloggers Network, I had the opportunity to review Littlest Pet Shop Garden for the DS and thought Gigi would love to give it a try. She has Littlest Pet Shop figures that she carries around in her purse, so it's fair to say she's a fan. Well the game did not disappoint.
Gigi quickly figured out the arcade style games and on the easy setting, she collected many points towards purchasing pets and of course, bling-bling for her pets.
What appealed to me was the games aren't all time-dependent (which can be frustrating for a child) and the ones that are, allow for very generous time allotments on the easy setting. By far, her favourite games are the colouring challenge where she uses the stylus and a palette to try and match a picture of one of the pets and the digging game, where she searches for hidden treasure before the clock runs out. Each time she completed a task, she either received a ribbon and/or coins to spend on her pets.
There are twenty pets to be collected, and Gigi maintains her menagerie in a little town built especially for them. She has access to the shop so she can buy them new accessories and even furniture with her winnings. Anytime she's running low on cash, she can go the arcade to win some more coins.
I like that the game will provide more challenge as her skills increase - I tried the harder settings and they are definetely harder. I caught myself swearing under my breath more than once, when I couldn't dig fast enough to find the buried treasure. I also liked that there are more games to unlock and that not everything is available right away, I like the incentive to play and beat her own scores (or mine).
Overall, we gave this game the thumbs up - Gigi has fun, she likes taking care of her pets (holy cow, the names she gives them make me laugh - himmy, simmy, jimmy, bimmy - see a pattern?), and I like that the games challenge her and offer room for growth and improvement as her skills develop.
